Shipyard Workers: Unseen Heroes at Risk of Asbestos-Related Dangers
If you or a cherished family member toiled in shipyards during the expansive era spanning from 1930 to 1980, you were unwittingly exposed to perilous and potentially fatal asbestos fibers within the shipbuilding and repair industry. The unsung heroes of our maritime history, shipyard workers, have faced latent dangers that continue to haunt them even today.
Asbestos fibers, when inhaled or ingested, artfully circumvent the body's natural respiratory defenses, insidiously infiltrating vital organs such as the lungs, abdomen, heart, colon, esophagus, larynx, kidneys, chest cavity, and pancreas. These invisible invaders pose a grave threat, one that often remains concealed for decades before manifesting as malignant Mesothelioma or asbestos-related cancer.
The duties of shipyard workers encompassed the construction, maintenance, repair, overhaul, and decommissioning of ships. Their dedication knew no bounds, as they toiled on various types of vessels, including aircraft carriers, attack support ships, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, frigates, submarines, and auxiliary vessels.
Regrettably, the risks did not cease at the shipyard gates. Many workers unwittingly carried home asbestos fibers on their clothing and skin, inadvertently exposing their families to secondary asbestos exposure hazards. The far-reaching consequences of their service extended beyond the docks.
The individuals most susceptible to direct asbestos exposure within shipyards include longshoremen, stevedores, shipbuilders, machine operators, insulators, pipefitters, painters, plumbers, concrete workers, electricians, welders, and Navy veterans, each silently battling the potential health repercussions of their service.
Mesothelioma, a relentless adversary, has laid its claim on many shipyard workers, forging direct links to asbestos exposure that are impossible to ignore. It is an affliction that strikes quietly, with symptoms often lying dormant for two to four decades.
The time has come to honor these unsung heroes by raising awareness of the risks they endured and continue to face. Through education and support, we can ensure that shipyard workers and their families receive the recognition and assistance they rightfully deserve in their battle against asbestos-related diseases.
